When I first started writing on Medium, I was filled with excitement, eager to share my thoughts and stories with the world. However, as with any new journey, I made plenty of mistakes.
Looking back, I realize these missteps taught me valuable lessons about writing, connecting with readers, and building an online presence.
Here are the mistakes I made as a new writer on Medium and how I am trying to make amends.
1. Using a follow-for-follow technique
When I started writing, I was very worried about my followers. Everyone here was having thousands of followers and me with just 2–3 followers. Someone suggested me to start following others on random basic, some will follow you back. I did the same thing and it really started to work and I started gaining followers. Although it worked, most of them turned out to be spammers, who just followed and disappeared. They didn’t even read a single article written by me.
Resultantly, I followed many spam accounts, accounts whose work don’t resonate with me, and inactive accounts.
